CanLake Ultras
October 11, 2025
The CanLake Ultra 50 mile is a race around Canandaigua Lake during peak fall foliage. The course, nestled in New York's Finger Lakes region, offers a mix of challenging terrains, from flat stretches to rolling hills, all framed by serene views of the lake and surrounding vineyards. The fully supported race has 11 aid stations offering fuel and panoramic views. Not ready for the full 50 miles? We also have a 50 km option that shares the last part of the 50 mile course.
New in 2025
Starting in 2025 the race is being directed by a partnership between FarFetched Enterprises and Wolfpack Multisport. We have established a race committee of several local race directors along with the prior CanLake Ultras race director. Our goal is to continue to provide continuity in the race people have loved for over 20 years, but also to make changes when we identify ways to improve the race experience. Most of the race experience will stay the same, but there are a few things that will be changing this year:
-
We will be discontinuing the 25k MiniCan. Introduced in 2018, this race has never had as many participants as the 50 mile and 50k. While this is a good option for people who are not ready for the 50k or 50 mile race, we would like to focus on the core identity of the race as an ultra event.
-
More flexible policies for transfers, deferrals, and refunds. We will also honor any deferrals from prior years.

Location & Parking

-
Parking is only allowed in Lot A. A portion of the lot is reserved for race organization. Lot B is reserved for members of the FLCC community.
-
The Atrium is the location for packet pickup, rest rooms, indoor space to gather, and post-race food.
-
The start of the 50 miler, the finish line, and the pickup spot for the 50 km shuttle are all in the area.

Course
CanLake Ultras 50 mile
Run one big road loop around the most beautiful Finger Lake in Western New York. The course is mostly flat to rolling roads with several major climbs, including the locally famous Bopple Hill.
CanLake Ultras 50k
Run point-to-point over the final 31 miles of the 50-mile route. With significantly less climbing and descending than the first 19 miles of the 50-mile route, the 50K is more friendly for first-time ultra runners and a logical step up from the marathon.
Aid Stations
-
There will be 11 aid stations along the course, including one that will be available twice, for a total of 12 possible stops.
-
All stations will offer water, lemon-lime Skratch Labs Hydration, soda, and a selection of Gu Energy gels.
-
Stations will also have a selection of food that will vary by location. This will include fruit, cookies, salty snacks, and candy. Items like quesadillas and warm broth will become available later in the day.
-
Select stations will be offering good stuff from local businesses like Project Lean Nation, Plenty the Bakery, and Old School Cafe.

Drop Bags
Athletes have the option to provide their own drop bags at check-in that will be transported to some aid stations.
-
Drop bags should be clearly labeled with athlete name, bib number, and aid station number/name.
-
May want extra shoes and/or socks in AS 2 Onanda Park Drop Bag. At around 2 miles you will be running through a grassy section that could be wet from rain or dew.
-
Should have reflective gear in AS 10 Bare Hill Drop Bag if expecting to be on the road past 6:30 PM. All runners and their pacers are required to wear reflective gear after 6:30 PM.
-
Drop bags will be returned to the finish as aid stations close. Depending on the needs of the racers, it may take time to return to the finish, so athletes should not expect drop bags back until 7:30 PM.
Giveaways
All registrants will get one of our long-sleeve, soft poly-blend shirts. Finishers will get one of our shiny new medals.

Rules of the Road
-
Use the sidewalk if one is available. After the start, runners will be directed to the sidewalk along Lakeshore Dr and will remain on paths through the City of Canandaigua.
-
If a sidewalk is not available, use the left shoulder facing traffic. No roads are closed for the race.
-
Yield to all traffic even if you have the right of way. Vehicles are big and solid; runners are small and squishy.
-
Be considerate of any other pedestrians. The sidewalks and shoulders are not closed for the race, so we'll be sharing.
-
Follow instructions of any police or road marshals, particularly at road crossings.
-
All runners and pacers on roads before sunrise or after sunset are required to wear high visibility garments such as reflective running vests or reflective running clothing. This applies to all early starters plus anyone who expects to be on the road past 6:30 PM. Unlike previous years, the race shirt is not reflective, so all runners should bring their own gear.
Pacers
Pacers are allowed starting at AS 9 Vine Valley (mile 35.6). Pacers must follow race rules including:
-
Register and sign a waiver, either online or in-person at check-in.
-
Provide their own transportation to Vine Valley.
-
Follow the rules of the road by always running in the left hand shoulder facing traffic and following any directions of marshals and officials.
-
Pacers can not "mule", by carrying food, water, or gear for their runner.
Crew
Crew, family, and friends are all welcome. However, to keep everyone safe, athletes should make their crew aware of all race rules. Failure to follow these rules could result in the disqualification of their athlete.
-
Do not drive or cycle alongside the runners.
-
Do not park on the shoulders of State Route 21, State Route 245, or Middle Rd. Do not park along roads within 100 yards of aid stations. The Athlete Handbook has more information on where crew can safely park.
-
Crew can provide aid at any point along the course, but are strongly encouraged to do so at the established aid stations. If providing aid outside an aid station, crew must be parked in a safe area that does not block traffic or the race course.
Athlete Handbook
Contains detailed information for athletes, pacers, and crew. Includes race day procedures and driving maps.
Operation Manual
Contains course maps, turn-by-turn directions, details about course markings, and safety procedures.
