Common Ground Winter Trail Series

Devil's Shadow Winter Trail Races is the third race in the Common Ground Winter Trail Series, a collaboration between FarFetched Enterprises, Goose Adventure Racing, and Doody Runs. The goal of the series is bringing together the trail running community to get out on the trails over the winter and enjoy each other's company. The series contains the following events:

Options to register for the full series are available on the Frozen Assets site. Series registrants will gain exclusive access to three bonuses:

  • Free entry into the Go Forth! event on February 28 (details TBD);

  • The Devil's Shadow winter beanie

  • Entry into a random draw for membership in the FarFetched Mug Club. Membership benefits include smug satisfaction and a 24 fl oz mug custom-crafted by Wizard of Clay, specifically designed for Common Ground's wide selection of hot beverages, soups, and cold beer.

Location, Parking & Schedule

The race is on the beautiful trails of Harriet Hollister Spencer State Recreation Area. There is a large parking lot for all of your parking needs. Once you park, there is a short walk down Overlook Road to Race HQ. On the map, it is where Bear Cub Run meets the road and crosses to the Bypass trail.

There are no indoor facilities in the park. There is a bathroom on-site, but there will not be additional port-a-potties. Parking will also be in the parking lot of Harriet Hollister Spencer State Recreation Area. The last quarter mile into the park is not paved and can be tricky depending on conditions.

10:00 AM - Check-in and same-day registration opens.
10:50 AM - Check-in and same day registration closes.

11:00 AM - Start of race.

12:00 PM - Post-Race festivities at Birdhouse Brewing.

Course

The course is an approximately 10k loop of mostly winding single track trail blazed for the S6 Endurance Mountain Bike Race.

There is a good probability that there will be snow on the course. This means four important things:

  1. Bring good footwear options. Conditions at Hollister are likely going to be colder and snowier than even just a few miles away. Having traction available could be wise.

  2. Snowshoes are not an option. Despite the hallowed snowshoe history of the race, we are not insured or permitted for snowshoes.

  3. Be courteous to Nordic skiers. Most of the course stays away from ski trails, but make sure you stay off of any part of a trail that is groomed for skiing. If you see a skier, be especially friendly.

  4. Watch out for snowmobiles. There will be two crossings over the C4 snowmobile trail. Snowmobiles have the right of way at the crossings, or honestly any time a runner and snowmobile attempt to share the same space.

Food & Drink

There are no aid stations on course. Bring any water and fuel you think you will need for the race. There will be a modest spread of food and drink at the start/finish area, including:

  • Warm Apple Cider Skratch Hydration

  • Water!

  • Snacks

Post-race gathering will begin around noon at Birdhouse Brewing in Honeoye, about a 10-minute drive (or 1.5 hour run) from Harriet Hollister. All athletes as well as friends and family are welcome to join us whenever you're able. Highlights of the gathering are sure to include:

  • We've reserved the upstairs lounge. Perfect for all of your post-race lounging needs!

  • We're buying the first round! This includes Birdhouse craft beer, hot mulled apple cider (with or without whiskey), Blue Barn hard cider, or soda.

  • Birdhouse's award-winning food menu will be available for ordering, so bring your appetite and your wallets.

  • Wearing nice, comfortable, clean footwear that doesn't track snow and mud all over Birdhouse's beautiful floors!
